New Media Technologies: Definition

New media technologies is a generic term which labels a variety of forms of electric communications that are available through the use of computer technology. This term comes from the relation to "old media forms" including printed newspapers and magazines that are static representations of text and images.

New Media Technologies includes:

  • -Websites
  • -Streaming audio and video
  • -Chat rooms/Online communities
  • -Online advertising
  • -E-mail
  • -DVD and CD'S
  • -Virtual reality environments

New media implies that the data communication is happening between desktops/laptops and handhelds such as PDA's and the media they take data from such as USB's and CD-ROM's.
